Ironfist question

Postby Feor » Mon Jul 26, 2010 1:57 pm

Hello all, I've finally got my 2000points of Ogres built (working on the painting aspect :P) and I find myself with a question about ironfists. The Ogre FAQ says that with Ironfists you should ignore the second sentence of it's entry: "If they use it as a shield in conjunction with a mundane hand weapon they gain the bonus to their Saving throw for being equipped with a hand weapon and shield."

Is thie being ignored because they don't get a +1 to their armour from it (just a parry save), or is that to be ignored just because there isn't any special rule for hand weapon & shield anymore?

Probably because their is no more bonus to your armour save. The MRB states that you get a 6+ ward save if equiped that way. That's probably the reason it says to ignore the entry. So yes to the first part of your last phrase.

no matter the case ironfists look cool but are not worth the points. But yes now it is a bit ambigous, I had noticed that too, about if the ironfists now only count as extra hand weapons (and are 1 point more than just extra handweapons) or if they can stil be that or a shield in combat. There is also the question about how it states in the MRB that special weapons overide mundane and the ogre club would be a special weapon so it could be argued that it cant be combined with a shield for the parry at any rate. This does need more clarification.

Those who lose to the army cite its rules in a context that makes them look ridiculous. Those who play the army cite its rules in a context that make them look mild as custard. Precious few ever change their view.

Well, the Ogre Club/Shield thing is a bit of a non-issue, the Iron Fist itself is a special weapon, so you can choose to use it instead of the Ogre club with a hand weapon. The potential weapon combos I see if you give your bulls iron fists:
Club alone (3 attacks, Armour piercing)
Club + hand weapon (4 attacks)
Hand weapon + Ironfist as weapons (4 attacks)
Hand weapon + Ironfist as shield (3 attacks, 6+/6++ save)

And before the advent of the parry save, I'd have agreed with you that Ironfists were kind of useless, But now, giving an entire unit a 6+ ward in close combat for 1 point/model seems like a pretty sweet deal.

um, 5points per and loss of armour piercing but it is true that 5 points for 6++ is better than the old +1 to save.

It's not that huge of a loss, even without the armour piercing you're still str4, so piercing armour anyways, just not REALlY piercing it. :D
